Derek McGurl – Managing Director

As the MD of DMG Food Safety Solutions, I have a long term passion for high standards from all food businesses, regardless of their size. I have worked in the food industry since leaving school, including management with a large high street retailer, specialising in fresh produce and the meat industry until 1984, at which time I began my career in Environmental Health as a Meat Inspector until the new Meat Hygiene Service came into effect from 1996. I subsequently joined the Environmental Health food team as a full time Food Safety Officer then, Senior Enforcement Officer the following year. Through gentle persuasion, I achieved a number of food safety qualifications, culminating in my degree in Environmental Health from Leeds Met in 2005.

For 26 years my main responsibilities at Redcar & Cleveland BC was to carry out food hygiene inspections including awarding the Food Standards Agency Food Hygiene Awards. Other duties included, food complaint investigations, infectious disease control, food and water sampling. For 10 years, I was responsible for running the Councils food hygiene training activities. This was the area that I enjoyed the most.

In 2013, I decided it was time to leave my position with the council to pursue my goal to set up my own independent company to deliver quality training and honest consultancy advice to the food industry. I have been actively employed in contracting for a number of Local Authorities carrying out many hundreds of programmed food hygiene inspections, hygiene award ratings and undertaking a number of new training partnerships with various training consultancies in the UK. To date this has been a successful venture and I look forward to the challenges ahead.
